■危機:蘇丹之死



On March 20th, a northern white rhino named Sudan died. Why is Sudan’s death important? Back in 2009, four of these animals were moved from a zoo in the Czech Republic to a conservancy in Kenya. The hope was that they would breed. In 2014, one of the last two males died. Now that Sudan is gone, hopes of reviving the northern white rhino may be gone with him.

一頭名叫蘇丹的北白犀牛今年3 月20 日過世了。這則消息為何受到重視?回到2009 年,當時有4 頭北方白犀牛(北白犀),從捷克動物園被送到肯亞的保育中心進行繁殖。牠們之中包括全球最後兩隻公的北白犀, 其中一隻在2014 年過世。隨著蘇丹也在日前過世,北白犀的復育計畫似乎就此落空了。



■現況:僅存2頭母北白犀



Of the four northern white rhinos in the Kenyan conservancy, only two females remain. They are the last two northern white rhinos in the world. There are many kinds of rhinoceros: black, Sumatran, Javan, greater one-horned, and northern and southern white rhinos. All of these rhinos are under threat of becoming extinct. Since there are only two northern white rhinos left, they are likely to become extinct very soon.

蘇丹死後,肯亞保育中心內的2 隻母北白犀,成為全世界僅存的北白犀。犀牛有許多種,包括黑犀、蘇門答臘犀、爪哇犀、大獨角犀(印度犀),以及北方白犀和南方白犀。這些犀牛都面臨瀕臨絕種的威脅。北白犀全世界只剩下2 頭母犀,因此短時間內可能就會絕種。

■契機:人工授精繁殖



If the northern white rhino is to be saved from extinction, they will need help from humans. Using a technique called artificial insemination, scientists hope to make northern white rhino embryos using sperm and eggs they have saved. This method has been used before to help endangered animals like the giant panda and Asian elephant.

現在唯有人類出手救援,方能幫助北白犀免於徹底滅絕。科學家希望藉助人工授精技術,利用保存下來的公北白犀精子,與母犀卵子結合做出胚胎,繼續繁衍北白犀。這套技術之前也曾用於大貓熊和亞洲象的復育。

■目標:南白犀當代理孕母,試管北白犀2011誕生



The good news is that scientists have had some success already. Hybrid rhino embryos with northern white rhino sperm and eggs from a female southern white rhino have been successfully created in test tubes. In the next step, scientists hope to create pure northern white rhino embryos and have them carried by live rhinos. However, the two existing female northern white rhinos are not able to bear calves because of poor health. Scientists therefore hope southern white rhino females will be able to carry the northern white embryos to term. That means putting the embryo inside a female southern rhino so that she can give birth. They are planning for the first calf to be born in the next three years.

日前傳來好消息,科學家已經先用北白犀的精子和南白犀的卵子,成功在試管裡做出南北白犀牛的「混血」胚胎。希望下一步可以做出純正的北白犀牛胚胎。不過,僅存的2 頭母北白犀因健康問題無法生育,因此科學家現在希望可由母南白犀代孕,亦即將北白犀胚胎,植入母南白犀體內至分娩。科學家預計3 年後就能產下第一隻北白犀寶寶。

■難題:缺乏基因多樣性

Even if scientists are able to use artificial insemination to keep the northern white rhino alive, there is another big challenge. For a species to thrive, there needs to be a lot of genetic diversity. That means many different males and females. Unfortunately, scientists only have about a dozen samples of northern white rhino DNA. Scientists hope to use southern rhino stem cells 好 辦 的 信用卡to create diversity in the gene pool.

不過就算透過人工授精進行繁衍,眼前還有另一道難題。物種能否繁衍, 有賴於基因的多樣性, 亦即這些基因必須來自數量多、差異大的公、母個體。可惜的是,囿於手上目前只有十多個北白犀的DNA 樣本,科學家只好另謀他法,希望未來透過取用南白犀的幹細胞, 可以豐富北白犀基因庫的多樣性。
